Del Norte Sheriff’s Office welcomes new deputy

Elias Amezcua was sworn in as a Del Norte Sheriff’s Office Deputy Oct. 2 by Sheriff Erik Apperson.

Amezcua is a graduate of the College of the Siskiyous Law Enforcement Academy.

Growing up in Weed, California, Amezcua had early ambitions of pursuing a career in the medical field. He even served as a certified nursing assistant for several years. He changed directions though after riding along with then CHP Officer John Nevarez and decided to work towards becoming a law enforcement officer.

Apperson said the DNSO feels absolutely fortunate to have him on board.

“Deputy Amezcua has a great background and wants to serve for all the right reasons,” Apperson wrote on the DNSO Facebook page. “He is community oriented and I am certain that Del Norte County will be a better place with him providing public safety to the people that live, work and visit here.”

Amezcua said he simply wants to help people.

“I understand that I may be called to serve them during their worst day and my goal is to be helpful,” Amezcua said.

At the swearing in ceremony, Amezcua’s wife DNSO Deputy Corina Amezcua pinned on his badge.

Additionally, Naverez who inspired Amezcua to achieve a career in law enforcement, retired from a meritorious career with the CHP and is now also a DNSO deputy.
