Not everyone calls me "Lord, Lord"!

By Donna DeWolf

This morning as I am having my time with the Lord, I noticed something that I had
to stop and look up. In Matthew chapter 7 verses 21 and 22, the word “LORD” is
written twice. A double entry in scripture is generally written to relay emphasis.
In this case the double entry should cause us to stop and really consider what is
being said.
Matthew 7:21-23 KJV says, Not everyone that saith unto me , Lord, Lord shall
enter unto the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is
in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many
wonderful works. (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart
from me, ye that work iniquity.
According to those who specialize in language, the entry is meant to show intensity,
urgency, or emotional weight. This double entry of the word “LORD” is meant to
relay a deep urgent appeal coming from those pleading with Jesus to be let into the
kingdom.
LORD! LORD! Let us in! LORD! LORD! What about all the great things we did for
you? Try to imagine you are on a sinking ship and the life boat is pulling people to
safety and they will not let you on board. You are desperately trying to get off the
sinking ship but are told they do not know you.
Or better yet, imagine you are in a burning building and the firemen are rescuing all
the people. You are yelling out for help. But you are overlooked. Imagine how
urgent your cries would be! You would not calmly say, help me. Your voice would be
raised. Your emotions would be high as you tried to get out of that burning
building.
This is the picture God is wanting you to get! Not everyone who professes to
believe in Jesus will enter the Kingdome of Heaven. Not everyone who says they
have made Jesus their Lord and Savior will enter the Kingdome of Heaven.
Luke 6:46 says, And why call ye, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? I
hope you can see what I am trying to convey! Just because you “say” you follow
God, does not give you access to the Kingdom! Have you deceived yourself? Have
you given into the lie that says “I can live how I want” or the lie that says “We live
under grace so I can live the way I choose” or the lie that says “God is love so He
will overlook my sinful life”?
My prayer this week is that we would all take a moment to examine our life and ask
the Lord where we stand. It would be horrible to find out too late that we needed
to take our relationship with Jesus more serious that we do.
