A North Coast Tradition Built for Fishermen Offers Family-Friendly Fishing Contest

By Linda Sutter

Before there was Home Depot, and long before Harbor Freight, there was — and still is — England Marine. Located on the North Coast, this cornerstone of Crescent City’s working waterfront has stood the test of time as the go-to destination for anyone serious about fishing, boating, and marine life.

Known affectionately as a “man’s manly-man store,” England Marine has become a local legend — the kind of place where men sneak off to without their wives, eager to browse aisles stocked with gear, gadgets, and everything needed for a day on the ocean. Beyond the humor and nostalgia, the store remains a trusted resource for the commercial and sport-fishing community alike.

England Marine offers a full range of fishing licenses, tackle, apparel, and equipment designed to meet the rugged demands of North Coast fishermen. Staffed by knowledgeable locals who understand the industry from deck to dock, it’s the ideal place to learn about current regulations, gear recommendations, and seasonal changes in local fisheries.

As autumn unfolds, sport crab season officially begins on November 1, drawing eager anglers to the water once again. Fishermen can currently pursue rockfish and lingcod through the end of the year, while salmon season remains open from below Rowdy Creek to the mouth of the Smith River. However, a low-flow restriction is currently in effect until the region receives additional rainfall.

Adding excitement for the younger anglers, England Marine has launched the Red-tail Surfperch Event, now running through December 31, for kids 14 and under. Participants can bring their catch into the store to have it officially weighed. The shop maintains an ongoing leaderboard featuring the top three heaviest Redtail Surfperch, proudly displayed inside the store.

Prizes include a Custom Rod for first place, a Trout Rod and Reel Combo for second place and 3rd place will receive a $25 England Marine Gift Card.

This family-friendly competition encourages young anglers to get out on the water, learn the art of fishing, and connect with Crescent City’s rich maritime heritage.

Located at 191 Citizens Dock Road, Crescent City, CA, Englund Marine is open Monday through Thursday: 7 am - 5pm and Saturdays 7am to 3pm.

Whether you’re a lifelong fisherman or a curious newcomer, England Marine continues to serve as a vital hub for the coastal community — a living reminder that tradition, knowledge, and craftsmanship never go out of style.
