Fear vs. God's promise

By Tori King

Numbers 13:23-24; Deuteronomy 1:25.

Fear often stands right at the edge of your greatest breakthrough!

When they came to the Valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them. They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs. They took some of the fruit of the land, carried it down to us, and brought us word: “It is a good land, full of abundance, that the LORD our God is giving us.”

The Valley of Eshcol is exactly where the battle between fear and faith is won or lost. Eshcol means cluster and represents the tangible, overwhelming proof of God’s goodness. Yet, right next to the proof of the promise stood the giants. How often do we see God's blessings yet doubt His power? When you are standing in your own "Valley of Eshcol"—looking at a new house, a career change, or a financial leap—the Bible explains how to choose the grapes and God's provision over the giants.

In life, every person and every Christian will eventually stand in this exact valley. God rarely gives us a detailed blueprint for the new season; He usually just gives us direction. In Joshua 5, we see that in the wilderness, the Israelites received manna every morning, but in the Promised Land, they had to fight, plant, and harvest. We cannot possess the new season using the mentality of an old one.

In the Promised Land, they would learn stewardship, cultivation, and warfare. The new season required greater maturity.

In John 16:7, Jesus told His disciples: "It is to your advantage that I go away." Yet, Jesus understood that a greater dimension of relationship through the Holy Spirit was coming.

God never wastes a valley; He uses the trials of our lives to build the endurance we need to step forward into His promises. When you hear your own fears echoing back at you in the Valley of Eshcol, the Bible reveals that the obstacles are not roadblocks from God; they are His training ground to mature you so you can actually handle the weight of the promise.
