A New Chapter in Our Community Service

By Del Norte Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution

Friends and Neighbors,

We are writing to share an important update about the Del Norte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), based in Crescent City, California.

Due to declining membership and difficulty filling chapter leadership positions, the Del Norte Chapter has closed and merged with the Redwood Forest Chapter in Eureka, California. Although our chapter will no longer operate as a separate organization, our local members remain committed to serving the Crescent City and Del Norte County community.

Over the years, many of you have come to know our chapter through its community activities. These have included helping sponsor an Honor Flight, hosting Kentucky Derby functions, cleaning and preserving local monuments, and helping place flags for Memorial Day. We also built the Rocky Peterson Memorial Flagpole, participated in Wreaths Across America, held genealogy workshops, and worked with national park partners to help relocate the National Tribute Grove’s commemorative marker at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

The National Tribute Grove in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park encompasses approximately 5,000 acres of old-growth redwoods preserved as a living memorial to those who served in the United States armed forces during World War II. Dedicated in 1949, the grove includes a 500-acre unit preserved through the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, with the State of California contributing half of that unit’s purchase funds. Our chapter’s work with national park partners involved relocating the grove’s commemorative marker, not the forest itself.

On October 22, 2026, we made our final contribution as the Del Norte Chapter by presenting a check to the City of Crescent City for the upkeep and repair of the Rocky Peterson Memorial Flagpole. This donation reflects our continued commitment to caring for a local memorial that our chapter brought to the community.

These efforts brought our members together with neighbors and community partners to honor service, preserve local history, and encourage an interest in family heritage. We are grateful to everyone who helped make these projects and events possible.

While our organizational home has changed, our connection to this community remains. As members of the Redwood Forest Chapter, we will continue selected activities here in town as our membership allows. We are not announcing the continuation of every previous program, but we want our neighbors to know that we will still be involved locally.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, supporters, and local organizations who have worked alongside the Del Norte Chapter. Your generosity, encouragement, and friendship have been an important part of our chapter’s story.

We look forward to maintaining those connections as we begin this next chapter of service. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Sincerely,

Former Members of the Del Norte Chapter
