What are the things that God hates?
Proverbs 6:16-19 AMP These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him: (17) A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hand that shed innocent blood, (18) A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, (19) A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren.
There are many things in the Bible that tell us how to follow the Lord, how to live, what to stay away from. God gave us the Ten Commandments so that we would know how to live and how to stay right with God. Yet here we find in the book of Proverbs a list of things that God hates and a seventh thing that He calls and abomination!
We are going to spend the next few weeks looking at Proverbs 6:16-19. By the end we will hopefully, understand why the Lord hates these things and why He is straight forward in what He is saying.
The first item we find is pride. We have all met prideful people and we all know what pride is. I looked up the word and found that besides meaning to exalt yourself above another, it has a root in the word that means to be rotten or to be wormy. So, the first thing we find is that being prideful makes you rotten and wormy inside.
If God hates the proud, what does He like? Micah 6:8 tells us that God requires that we walk humbly with our God. The opposite of pride is to be humble. Isaiah 66:1-2 says the lord is saying all that he built, which is everything! But in verse 2 He tells us that what he chooses to look at is a humble person.
So, think of all the beautiful things God created and He could choose to look upon. The stars, the flowers, the ocean, the river, the mountains, etc.… Yet, He chooses to look upon a humble person.
James 4:10 tells us to Humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord. Please notice He tells us to humble ourselves. This is another choice that God allows us to make. We can choose to be prideful, or we can choose to be humble. One choice will pull us further away from the presence of the Lord and the other choice will bring us closer to Him.
I pray we all consistently choose the way closer to God!
