What are the things that God hates? Part 2

By Donna DeWolf

Proverbs 6:16-19 AMP These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him: (17) A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hand that shed innocent blood, (18) A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, (19) A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren.

This week we are going to look at the next thing that the Lord hates. A lying tongue! A lying tongue is the opposite of truth. What is truth? We live in a time where truth seems to depend on who you are and what your beliefs are. I can assure you that just because you believe something does not make it true.

Currently in our society we have a lot of laws and rules based on what some people believe as opposed to what is truth. Our laws can change based on what those in power believe to be true. Then when our governmental leadership changes, they bring with them their own set of beliefs and they change laws to match those beliefs.

Truth does not change. If your beliefs are constantly changing you are not following truth. Jesus said that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life in John 14:6. In that same verse He said that nobody comes to Father except by Him. There are a lot of lies out there saying a lot of things about heaven, hell, life after death. People will say all kinds of things to make you believe you can have a short cut to God. You can work your way to Him is one lie that quickly comes to mind, although there are many others.

Lies can do all kinds of damage. Jesus is all about unity in relationships. Lies tear relationships apart. Lies tear apart trust. I think we probably all know people who just cannot tell the truth to save their lives. We do not usually believe what they tell us. Currently we have a lot of people in congress who would not be considered truthful.

Biblical truth is what is real because God is real, what is reliable because God is faithful, and what is to be spoken and lived rather than used as a weapon or a mask. If we claim to have been born again, if we claim to have a relationship with Jesus and still are speaking lies; we should re-examine our claim. Jesus came to deliver us from evil. Speaking lies follow the path of evil. The Bible says in John 8:44 that the devil is the father of lies.

Dear God, help us all the walk in truth and shun all lies. In Jesus Name, Amen.
