What is your Foundation in Christ Truly Built On?
Jesus is showing us what holds our lives together when everything gets hard!
Matthew 7:24-27: Jesus said, "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
We all face different storms in this life: a broken marriage, a devastating death, or deep depression. We all know the trials and hurt that we face every day in this life and even the battle to keep our hearts right before the Lord. Storms happen in life, regardless of our faith.
Matthew 5:3-12: The rock layers of the Beatitudes that Jesus meant for us to put into practice start with the heart: Blessed are the poor in spirit because you know you need God. Blessed are those who mourn; you feel deep sorrow for sin and pain, and you are comforted by God. Blessed are the meek; you stay quiet and calm because you trust God. Blessed are you who hunger for righteousness and desire what is right and good. Blessed are the merciful; they show grace to others; you forgive because God forgave you. Blessed are the pure in heart; they want to please God with true motives. Blessed are the peacemakers because they stop fights and heal hurts. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake because they stand strong for Jesus; even when people hate you, you stay true to God.
The wise builder must do some deep digging to keep the heart humble. This takes hard work and prayer. Winds and floods will hit you, but a life built on God's character will stand tall and safe.
The foolish builder hears Jesus' words but fails to put them into practice, choosing an easy, unstable foundation that collapses when life's severe storms hit. He does not obey or live them out. He lives an unchanged life.
Jesus is saying that there is only one thing that holds when life gets hard, and that's Him.
