When My Love for Christ Grows Weak!

By Tori King

Revelation 2: 1-7, The Church of Ephesus: Jesus commends the Ephesian Church for their hard work (labor), perseverance in the face of hardship, and their commitment to theological truth by testing and rejecting false apostles and calling them liars.

"You have labored for my name's sake and have not grown weary.

Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent." The lampstand is the church's public witness and divine authorization to represent Jesus. The church is the lampstand, Jesus is the source of light, and the Holy Spirit is the flame. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

THEY HAD ONE MAJOR ISSUE: Their love for Christ had grown weak. When life gets busy and stressful, we slip into doing religious tasks out of habit instead of an active, loving relationship with God. Life's pressure crowds out quiet time with God. Service becomes a checklist instead of an expression of love. Our flame goes out because we have made it a duty instead of a relationship with Christ.

This congregation serves as a profound case study for modern believers and ministries today: a church can be doctrinally sound, active, and highly disciplined, yet spiritually compromised by losing its core devotion to God.

When our hearts become calloused by religious routine, we cannot feel the joy of our salvation anymore. We need God to break up the hard soil of our hearts. We must pray specifically for God to replace our cold, mechanical sense of duty with a tender heart that is easily moved by his grace again.

Luke 10:42 As Jesus told Martha, only one thing is truly needed: to sit at His feet. Prayer and intimacy with Jesus.

The Ephesians had their hands full of Church work, but their hearts were empty of peace.

We need to slow down and silence the noise of our packed schedules and make room for the unhurried presence of the Holy Spirit.

"Holy Spirit, you are welcome in this place" should be our heart for the Church today, because otherwise we are dead spiritually.

Revive us, O Lord!
