Clean Up Volunteers Making a Huge Difference

Every year for at least the last ten,  Volunteers have cleaned up Crescent South Beach immediately following July 4th.  And their efforts have been nothing short of phenomenal.

The Smith River Alliance in partnership with Redwood Parks Conservancy, California Dept. Of Transportation  and Recology Del Norte have removed spent fireworks and tons of trash which besmirch the awesome  beauty of the North Coast.  Organized by co-Executive Directors Grant Werschkull and Patty McCleary, Smith River Alliance has dedicated all its energy and effort to safeguard and restore the Smith River watershed and maintain our spectacular forests, Pacific Ocean, rivers and wildlife.

The garbage weight this past July 5 was just 860 pounds. The previous two years, litter totaled 3000 pounds. “The reduction is an amazing number stated  Autumn Subers, Redwood Parks Conservancy volunteer and Transportation director. This number and recognition to  a growing number of folks responsible for picking up their trash. An additional 1440 pounds of trash was renived fro, the harbor, mouth of the Elk River estuary to the breakwater.

Recology Del Norte waived all dump fees.

80-100 volunteers   showed up to clean up South Beach and Elk Valley Creek, over the bridge and into Beachfront park.

Associate director Mike Splain hopes to lower the descending amount of trash by asking public support for all who enjoy the 4th to please ask the public to pick up their trash and make a deposit in the ubiquitous refuse cans scattered about the immediate coastline AND consider volunteering to help next year.

Let’s make Crescent City and Del Norte County the most beautiful, trash-free community on the North American continent.
