The Trip of a Lifetime…
The Point St. George Lighthouse Preservation Society (SGRLPS), a 501c3, has announced its plan for helicopter flights to the iconic 1.6 acre wind-swept Lighthouse six miles off shore, Crescent City, California.
The incredible lighthouse was built in the aftermath tragedy of the Brother Jonathan ship crash upon then-unsurveyed Dragon Rock, July 30, 1865. The challenging lighthouse was built over a ten year period in the 1880’s and lite its first light, October 20, 1892. The U.S. Coast Guard staffed and operated this beautiful edifice for some seven decades, the Coast Guard de commissioned Lady St. George in 1975 to replaced a “floating lighthouse” buoy. In 1996, the Lighthouse Preservation Society founders Guy and Alice Towers were the recipients of the transfer to the SGRLPS which conducts ongoing restoration as well as tours of the site. Cal Trans Aviation suspended all helicopter flights to land atop the deck, due to a lack of permit as a heliport. After an arduous bureaucratic journey on a Federal and State level, flights were ultimately resumed some years back. Since 2018, some 325 folks have experienced the round trip and tour of the lighthouse…The trip of a Lifetime.
President of SGRLPS, John Zimmerman has announced flights may resume in August, September and October. John encourages you to take the helicopter flight to St. George.
If you have exigent knowledge of a helicopter equipped with floats, a requirement from Cal Trans-Aviation, please share that information.
