Hitting the Mats

Crescent City is making a name for itself in the world of youth wrestling. Five young athletes from the Redwood Wrestling Club recently competed at the prestigious California State Youth Folkstyle Wrestling Tournament and their performances were nothing short of impressive.

Layton Magana, wrestling in the Novice Boys 98 lbs division, battled through a bracket of 24 competitors. Across the mat, Keanu Lemrise faced an even larger field of 34 wrestlers in the Intermediate Boys 59 lbs division. Despite the tough competition, both boys showed incredible grit and determination.

In the Intermediate Boys 71 lbs class, Zeb Allard took home 6th place out of a 24-wrestler bracket. Jase Price-Lewis also earned a 6th place finish, this time in the Novice Boys division with a 28-wrestler field.

The girls were well-represented too, as KellyAnne Bates placed 5th in the Intermediate Girls 67 lbs division, which featured 14 competitors. AJ Nova emerged victorious in the Bantam 85+ lbs division, claiming the state championship in a bracket of just two wrestlers.

“These kids have worked so hard, and it’s amazing to see their dedication pay off on the biggest stage,” said Redwood Wrestling Club President and Coach, Cody Magana.

Coach Dana Allard said, “Beyond the medals and titles, they are learning invaluable lessons about grit, discipline, and the pure joy of competition.”

The success of these young wrestlers is a testament to the impact that the Redwood Wrestling Club is having on the community. By providing quality coaching and competitive opportunities, the club is helping to shape the next generation of athletes, both on and off the mat.

As the town of Crescent City swells with pride, the future looks bright for these young wrestling stars. With continued support and guidance from their coaches and community, there’s no telling how far they will go.
