I do not live in Crescent City, but I know that successes in Crescent City benefit everyone who lives in the County. I do wonder why Roger Gitlin is running for City Council. Why did he file to run at the last minute? I went to the Election Office to read Roger’s candidate statement, which tells…

Last Wednesday, I was notified by Dan Schmidt that he and his wife Phyllis had “given away” the Del Norte Triplicate to another publisher. I have been aware for some time that producing a weekly newspaper was wearing on them both. I want to thank Phyllis and Dan for saving the Triplicate. It has…

In politics as in life, it is not possible to do everything I would like to. I would rather do a few things well than many things badly. Going into this election cycle, I decided to focus my energy on electing good people to the School Board and City Council. Both agencies are vital to us all.…

The Del Norte County Republican Party and the Del Norte County Democratic Party both organized parties recently that provide a good comparison of the different philosophical approaches each party follows to achieve a political outcome. This is a tale of two parties. Last Saturday the Del Norte…

Flock is a brand of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR), an AI technology being deployed across the country. I had not thought much about the use of ALPR until a series of recent Redwood Voice articles by Jessica Cejnar Andrews caught my attention. Following are some story highlights and personal…

Labor Day is more than beaches and BBQs. It is a celebration of all the rights that workers have gained due to the efforts of organized labor. We can thank labor unions for the achievements that American workers enjoy today, including higher wages, better benefits, safer working conditions, and job…

Extreme election deniers are pursuing radical changes to our election system based on a myth of voter fraud. In fact, there are only rare examples of voter fraud. In California and Del Norte County we have honest, free and fair elections. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I recently read in the San…

Last week I commented on the 41st District Agricultural Association (41st DAA) failure to meet at regular and predictable times. This week I will provide a partial explanation for why this is occurring. It is not enough to complain about a problem; it is also important to try to solve it. I…

I just spent 4 days at the County Fair volunteering in the Democratic Party booth. It is impressive every year to see a small army of volunteers, paid staff and Board members work together to pull this off. Kudos to Kim and the crew. I have an issue to resolve with the District, but I do wish them…

A Super El Niño occurs when the central and eastern Pacific Ocean warms significantly. This warming disrupts the normal balance between the ocean and atmosphere, weakening trade winds and suppressing the upwelling of cooler, nutrient rich water. The loss of upwelling can affect our fisheries. Super…

In my last column, I stated that birds provide a connection to nature, enhance wellbeing, improve mental health and are an indicator of environmental health. Based on my personal experience I can attest to this. My homestead is a bird sanctuary and when I go outside, I am surrounded by bird song.…

“So long, and thanks for all the fish” is a humorous idiom used to say goodbye, acknowledging the positive experiences received during the time spent. This comes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a fantasy where dolphins used the phrase as they left Earth just before it was destroyed. “The…

When watching a series on Netflix, the program will automatically roll over to start the next episode when the episode you are watching is finished. This will continue to happen up to a point when you will get a pop up on your screen that asks, “Are you still watching?” As I continue to churn out a…

Our U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1788 and went into effect the next year. Since adoption the U.S. Constitution has been amended 27 times beginning with the bill of rights - the first 10 amendments, which were ratified in 1791. Since then, corrections have been made to ensure the rights of “We…

We have two major parties in America, the Democrats and the Republicans. It is not surprising that these two parties disagree on what form of government we have. Are we a democracy or a republic or some combination of both? I found a story on this topic from Jefferson Public Radio that has some…

Last Saturday and Sunday the North Coast Chorale held our spring performances, and I was happy to be a part of it. This is the least political activity that I am involved with. When I am at practice or performing, I don’t think about whether the person next to me is a democrat or a republican. It…

Another Earth Day has come and gone. April 22 was the 54th anniversary of the first Earth Day and I felt kind of bad that I did not do anything special as I have in the past. Then I remembered the slogan, “Every day is Earth Day” and rationalized that I can always do something tomorrow. Today, I…
