In the spirit of Thanksgiving and the important role that cranberries play in Thanksgiving dinner, I will tell you a story about the history of cranberries. My primary source is an informative article I read on cranberries, “The Top 5 U.S. States That Grow the Most Cranberries,” written by Mike…

It has been over a month since the Hamas terrorists attacked Israel and captured over 200 hostages. It is justified that people should condemn this attack on Israel. It is also reasonable to have concerns about the rising death toll on Palestinian civilians. Most people living in Gaza are not…

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a 1966 musical comedy starring Zero Mostel about palace intrigue and deception where things don’t go at all according to plan. Observing local politics and the way people interact with our elected officials sometimes reminds me of this comedy of…

Any sea captain can tell you that on a voyage sometimes a course correction is necessary. If the easiest route will lead you into a rocky shoal, then it is best to reconsider your present course. This is what the Board of Supervisors did at their October 24 meeting. After failing to decide an…

I have been contributing a column to the Del Norte Triplicate every week for more than a year and a half. Today is my 83rd consecutive column. As hard as I have tried to make sure that my sources are credible and the information I provide is accurate, it was inevitable that I would make a factual…

Last month I wrote a column about fire insurance and a separate one about artificial intelligence (AI). I got a priceless email from a faithful reader in response to my column on AI. She sent me a message which just said, “Huh?” Artificial intelligence is complicated, but I can provide an example of…

There is a stark difference between local government agencies in the way they manage and record public meetings. City Council and Board of Supervisor meetings are run with professionalism. Agendas are posted in a timely manner and minutes are published promptly. Smaller agencies may find it harder…

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT have been in the news lately. What does this mean? Artificial Intelligence is defined as the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision…

In a prior column, “Politics, Policy, and Progress” (8/15), I wrote about my appointment to the California Democratic Party (CDP) Platform Committee. Our platform is a statement of values and principles that represent a consensus of the members of the party. The Rural Plank of our platform focuses…

It makes me sad to think about the local forests that burned in the recent fires. Friends have tried to console me saying, “They will grow back.” I know the forests will grow back, but not in my lifetime. Even if we help them grow back will they be the same ecosystems that existed before? Can humans…

I was in Visalia at the Executive Board meeting of the California Democratic Party when the power was shut off in Del Norte County. I stayed up late Saturday night to finish my Labor Day column in a place where I had power and internet before heading back on Sunday. The Executive Board meeting ended…

Most people think of Labor Day as the last day of summer. It is a day for beach parties and picnics in the park. For businesses it is a time to hold clearance sales to move out the summer inventory. In fashion circles Labor Day is the date after which one should not wear white. It is always the…

My primary objective when I get involved with any political endeavor is to foster good policies and programs. It is always my hope that if we elect capable and qualified people that they will lead us to progress. But the hard work starts after the election. It is my ongoing mission to bring greater…

It has been interesting to listen to people’s thoughts on offshore wind development. As with many other issues, having a lack of facts or accurate information is not an impediment to having an opinion. There are legitimate concerns about the potential environmental impacts of offshore wind, but no…

I was taking the sign down for the Democratic Headquarters Grand Opening when a guy in a pickup truck drove by and yelled, “F… you Democrats!” This generalized hostility makes no sense. This man doesn’t know me or what I believe. He doesn’t care. He hates all Democrats. This is just sad. I…

It is always gratifying for me to talk to people who read my column. As I mentioned in an earlier column, there is no point for me to write a column every week if no one is reading it. I tell audience members that compliment me on a musical performance with Tsunami Swing or the North Coast Chorale,…

Inevitably death comes to us all. The way people respond to death is the only variable. Recently the mass media provided nonstop coverage of the fate of the tourists who paid a quarter million dollars each to risk their lives to go 12,000 feet deep into the ocean to see the Titanic wreckage. At the…

I think safe drinking water should be a basic human right, but this is not reality. One in ten people on the planet lack access to clean water. Overuse, water pollution, lack of infrastructure, and changing weather patterns due to climate change are some of the drivers of water scarcity. Droughts…
